Understand the reasoning behind an intelligence assessment

Our perspectives address the questions clients should consider when commissioning and interpreting research. They explain how human insight differs from documentary information, why corroboration matters and how a well-defined due-diligence brief avoids collecting information that does not answer the decision. The aim is practical understanding rather than a catalogue of impressive-sounding techniques.

These articles are explanatory material, not legal advice, live threat alerts or a subscription intelligence feed. A general example cannot determine whether a proposed method is lawful in a particular jurisdiction. Current decisions should rely on an engagement-specific assessment and qualified professional advice where the matter requires it.

Use a perspective to ask better commissioning questions

Before instructing work, ask what evidence would change your decision, which source categories can address that question and what limitations will remain. During review, ask whether an apparent connection has been verified, whether repeated reports are independent and how contradictory information has been handled. These questions reveal more about analytical quality than the volume of collected material.

The next step should be connected to the uncertainty. Further interviews may help explain context; additional records may test an ownership lead; counsel may need to evaluate a legal implication. A useful perspective helps distinguish these tasks and keeps intelligence connected to a legitimate organisational purpose.
